About Ria

As Director of Ria Poole Consultancy Ltd, Dr Ria Poole works with organisations and businesses to design, innovate and evaluate their products, services and working practices to address various social and environmental challenges, and create sustainable and meaningful impact.  Ria has 17 years’ experience of working within the applied health, social, environmental and creative arts sectors as a psychologist, researcher, educator and consultant.   She has received prestigious research grant awards from the Medical Research Council and Cancer Research UK, and through her work has supported the delivery of national programmes and projects for the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR), WRAP UK, Department of Health, Welsh Government, and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI).  As an academic and social scientist, Ria has worked extensively for University of Exeter and Cardiff University in senior research positions, clinical and community trials, impact generation, teaching, bid writing, and business outreach and consultancy.

Ria has a PhD and a BSc in Applied Psychology from Cardiff University, and practitioner-level qualifications in Managing Successful Programmes (MSP) and Project Management (PRINCE2).  She has written extensively for businesses (plans, strategies, protocols, reports, etc.) and is engaged with policy briefings for UK Parliament.  She has published 12 academic papers in international peer-reviewed journals, as well as public-facing articles for The Conversation, and has presented at numerous conferences and organisational away days as a presenter and keynote speaker.

With a passion for social and environmental justice, inclusion and supporting professional best practice, Ria loves working with businesses and organisations who seek to make a meaningful and impactful difference.  Ria has developed training courses and workshops on Intersectionality in Practice, and is currently leading on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) for the RENEW Programme at the University of Exeter as their Postdoctoral Impact Fellow.

What I Offer

  • Ria is an EDI (Equality, Diversity and Inclusion) public speaker, trainer and facilitator, specialising in training and mentoring organisations in intersectionality in practice and how to work towards becoming meaningfully inclusive.  She speaks both from her professional expertise and lived experience (for example, as a woman of North African heritage) and is aware of her own interlocking layers of privilege and disadvantage.

Intersectionality in practice asks us to listen to and centre the voices of those living with multiple layers of oppression and marginalisation (such as race and gender), and to respect the interconnectedness of such social categories and how they overlap to create further discrimination and disadvantage.  The focus of her training is to collectively explore and understand what intersectionality means in applied terms and how we can address these challenges together within our roles, work and the spaces we occupy.  By embedding the principles of intersectionality in practice within an organisation we can work towards meaningful inclusion, equity and collective liberation for all.

Training is tailored to your organisation.  Ria will take the time to fully understand your organisation’s needs and ambitions, and where you are on your pathway to social inclusion and equitable practice.  She will then present options for training.  Ria designs and delivers workshops, presentations, away days, and mentoring sessions for leaders and/or their teams.  She also has expertise in delivering bespoke training to organisations across different sectors – including academia, health and wellbeing, environment and sustainability, and the creative arts.

Sessions may be delivered online or face-to-face.  The overarching aims of intersectionality and inclusivity training may include:

    • Awareness and understanding of the concept and application of intersectionality

    • Identifying strategic areas and planning processes that support and embed intersectionality in practice

    • Opening safer spaces within teams to facilitate dialogue, shared learning, reflexivity and ideas generation

    • Practicing active listening towards inclusive action

    • Developing mechanisms for accountability

    Examples of in-depth bespoke sessions:

    • Inclusive recruitment guidance

    • Developing inclusive communications frameworks

    • Inclusive practices for events management

    • Creating bespoke opportunities for marginalised groups: professional development, support for mental health and wellbeing, visibility and recognition

    • Inclusive co-production and stakeholder engagement for research design and innovation

    • Collecting EDI-related data and how to use these data effectively

    • Community conversations: reach, engagement and holding spaces for voices on the margins

Please read the testimonials from my clients below and reach out if you are interested in working with me.

My Values

Creating spaces for more justice, equity, authenticity & inclusion

I am an activist engaged with issues relating to social and environmental justice.  Always seeking to learn more and do better for the care of all people and our planet, my values are integral to my practice.  It is important for me to support organisations who are keen to make a positive difference to people’s lives and are working towards equity and inclusion, even if this is not the focus of our work together.

I have a compassionate, insightful and creative approach, and believe that effective communication through active listening and gentle enquiry can lead to greater mutual understanding and support the development of shared goals and outcomes.  As much as I offer added value through my contributions to organisations, I also learn so much from the people I work with, and for this opportunity I am so grateful.

Testimonials

“It was great to work with you, Ria. You immediately understood the breadth and depth of what Well Image is trying to achieve and your experience and attention to detail were much needed and appreciated.  We will be taking up your guidance on setting up a bespoke workshop working with people of colour. I hope to be working again with you soon. Thanks again.”

Vanessa Miles, Well Image CIC - Logic Modelling & Evaluation Suite

“Brilliant, eye opening and great knowledgable leader/facilitator.”

Axis Away Day Participant

“The session made me reflect on the ways fear of getting things wrong can sometimes lead to inaction. It highlighted the importance of stepping into discomfort, even when unsure, rather than letting hesitation become a barrier.  It also made me think about the complexity of hierarchy, how priorities sit, who holds power, and how decisions are shaped by these structures. On a personal level, it made me reflect on my own lived experiences and the tension between recognising them as barriers or marginalisations while also feeling hesitant to use them as a standpoint for advocacy.”

Mark Smith, Executive Director, AXIS - Intersectionality Training

“On behalf of Inspiring Women Network, I would like to express our gratitude to you for being a Keynote Speaker at our International Women’s Day Gala. Your speech on Creativity, Equity, and Collective Action was incredibly powerful and inspiring. Your powerful words about collective care and responsibility resonated deeply with everyone in attendance and left a lasting impact on our hearts and minds. Your willingness to share your expertise, experiences, and insights especially on the current global climate added immense value to our event, not to mention your willingness to help even with the event planning. We are truly grateful for your invaluable contribution.”
